Position:         Director of Philanthropy

Reports to:     Vice President, Development

Position Description

Reporting directly to the Vice President, Development, the Director of Philanthropy is a key member of the Development team and is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy that supports the strategic plan of Science World. This position requires an experienced fundraising team leader with major gift and annual giving experience, strong interpersonal skills and an openness to explore new and innovative revenue-generating ideas. Cross-departmental collaboration is a key component of this role as is fostering and developing key relationships with community leaders, staff members, Board, and volunteers.


  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward individuals and foundations and grants to generate financial support of Science World while meeting personal, team and organizational revenue goals
  • Work with the VP, Development and Development Team Directors to develop annual and capital fundraising plans and budgets, ensuring the delivery, monitoring and reporting of the plan is in alignment with organizational strategic goals
  • Lead the development, monitoring and growth of revenue streams to generate funds for mission-related purposes including major gifts, annual giving, monthly donations, foundation and grant support and events
  • Personally manage and solicit a pipeline of major gift prospects and donors at the five and six figure giving level
  • Lead, coach and inspire direct reports on fundraising best practices including goal setting and monitoring, reporting, supporting high-level performance, recognizing success and cultivating a culture of philanthropy
  • Support ongoing build and execution of key campaign architecture pieces, including: Fundraising Committee, Board & Advisory Council Engagement, lead prospect identification, supporting management of key pipeline develop and reports and stewardship activities
  • Work in partnership with the Development department and other team members to maximize individual, foundation and grant revenue and opportunities across all Science World programs and activities 
  • In collaboration with Director, Corporate Partnerships, oversee and monitor donor communication, stewardship and recognition, maintenance of donor database including business rules and best practices for record management
  • Drive collaboration, cross-functionally and diplomatically across Science World, to lead the development and on-going stewardship of account strategies for Science World’s key individual, foundation and grant accounts
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Experience team to ensure that fundraising strategy is aligned with our content across all channels and aligned to our core organizational values
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in philanthropy using this knowledge and research to continually enhance overall fundraising strategy
  • Promote a culture that is donor-centric, where requests from internal and external stakeholders are responded to with a high degree of urgency, professionalism and accuracy
  • Perform other duties as per the business’s needs

Job Requirements

  • University graduate with 10 years of professional, non-profit fundraising experience
  • Excellent understanding of comprehensive fundraising functions and CRA regulations related to philanthropy 
  • Demonstrated connections and experience in BC’s philanthropic community
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to mentor, coach and inspire development professionals
  • Demonstrated record in personally identifying, cultivation and securing major gifts
  • Experience working on campaign fundraising and with senior volunteers working in executive and entrepreneurial leadership roles
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to communicate with a diverse donor community
  • Strategic thinker and proven analytical skills
  • Strong knowledge of databases, creating or overseeing creation reports, and donor segmentation
  • Strong attention to detail; superb organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to successfully guide and execute donor and foundation relationships in a matrixed reporting environment
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, with proven interpersonal savvy and a keen sense of diplomacy
  • Resourceful and organized; able to manage competing priorities, complex situations and deadlines
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and Raiser’s Edge an asset
  • Valid BC Driver’s License
