Developing World Connections is an international development charity located in Kamloops, British Columbia. Its mandate is to address issues of poverty and social justice and create greater global engagement. It accomplishes this mandate through community development projects in various countries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America. This work is carried out by sending volunteer teams to work on small infrastructure projects like building schools or water systems, and through implementing longer-term donor-funded projects directly with its in-country partners.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Manager, Philanthropy will develop, implement, and evaluate a year-round fundraising strategy that builds strong relationships with donors, businesses and foundations. In this newly created position, the successful candidate will build a robust and intentional fundraising program.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Manager, Philanthropy will provide fundraising leadership and recommend then execute a strategic fundraising plan. The successful candidate with be a person with strong relationship building skills. The plan will grow donor support through fundraising channels such as integrated direct marketing campaign, monthly giving, individual giving and sponsorships. The work will include creation and implementation of plans for prospect and donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, prospect development and other fundraising opportunities as they arise with businesses and foundations.

The Senior Manager, Philanthropy will collaborate with the Executive Director on fundraising and provide the Executive Director with all relevant information and updates in a timely manner, troubleshooting and intervening where required to ensure all tasks, timelines and goals are met. The Senior Manager, Philanthropy will be responsible for developing, monitoring and addressing issues related to the critical path, work plans and all deliverables related to the areas of fundraising.

Fundraising Duties

The successful candidate will grow, broaden and strengthen fundraising from individuals as well as businesses and foundations. The work will include:

  • Developing annual work plans and critical paths for the fundraising revenue streams, consulting with the Executive Director.
  • Providing regular updates to the Executive Director and key team members by identifying red flags, challenges and opportunities related to fundraising.
  • Ability to link donor, volunteer, and advocates’ aspiration to needs and the ability to catalyze others’ commitment to DWC.
  • When collaborating with other staff within DWC on fundraising, the Senior Manager, Philanthropy will provide leadership, guidance and support to ensure goals, objectives and timelines are met.
  • Understanding donor and prospect motivations to become philanthropic partners with DWC.
  • Reviewing and developing processes and procedures to optimize fundraising opportunities on a regular basis, making recommendations for changes as necessary.
  • Providing analysis of key annual giving metrics including retention, project ROI, acquisition, progress toward specific segments and/or project goals, year-to-year comparisons and overall trends on a semi-annual basis and ad-hoc, as necessary.
  • Collaborating with colleagues on which data and reports should be created and presented on an optimal schedule.
  • Creating cultivation, stewardship and relationship management plans for key donors and prospects.
  • Responsibility for writing fundraising copy, including fundraising communications, appeals, individualized donor communications, and remarks for fundraising-related events.
  • Supporting events, such as the annual golf tournament. Event planning and execution is carried out by other team members.
  • Managing and guiding external vendors related to fundraising strategy and execution. Overseeing project quotes, proofing, final approvals and any final reporting process.
  • Working with volunteers and collaborating with fellow staff members in a professional manner.
  • Working with the Marketing team member to develop a communication plan for supporters around the impact of their gifts.
  • Valuing diversity and inclusion and treating others with respect and dignity.
  • Actively listening to others and facilitating diverse input and contributions.
  • International travel may be required. Valid passport and ability to travel outside of Canada is essential.

Salary Range:
$68,000 - $75,000

Job Requirements

Education and Association preferences:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • CFRE credential preferred.
  • University degree related to philanthropy a plus.

Experience requirements and preferences:

  • Five years’ recent experience in fundraising, with a generalist’s understanding of the profession preferred.
  • Experience designing and implementing fundraising initiatives, including individual cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Experience and skills in building long term relationships.
  • Experience writing donor communications is required. Samples will be required at interview stage.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and managing plans, projects and reports.
  • Experience managing volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to focus on results and effectively communicate goals and impact to supporters and within the DWC team.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with international development desirable.

  • If not located in Kamloops, must be willing to travel to Kamloops up to 4 times per year.
