Associate Director, Principal and Planned Gifts - University of the Fraser Valley
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Director, Principal & Planned Gifts works with Advancement and Alumni Relations colleagues, senior leadership, faculty, staff and volunteers to facilitate maximum private and public sector support for UFV. The incumbent is expected to personally raise major and planned gifts in support of institutional funding priorities in the six to eight-figure range.
- Develops cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for a portfolio of 75-100 prospects and donors (individuals, foundations, associations and corporations) with a giving capacity of $100,000 or more.
- Builds and manages relationships with prospective donors in association with senior leadership, faculty, staff and volunteers.
- Works with colleagues across the University to promote prospect engagement, identify potential donors and determine strategies for engagement.
- Partners with Alumni Relations to identify and cultivate major gift prospects.
- Leads gift solicitations including preparation of briefing notes and call strategy, proposals, call reports and follow up. Coaches faculty, staff and volunteers as appropriate.
- Responsible for relaunching and managing UFV’s Planned Giving program.
- Participates in planning 50th Anniversary advancement strategy.
- Represents the university at community, networking and business events to build the university’s profile and to identify and cultivate donors and prospects.
- Works with Donor Relations colleagues to deliver tailored donor stewardship such as customized reports, dinner with the President etc.
- Works with Marketing to develop proposals and collateral tied to fundraising programs and funding priorities
- Supervises strategic annual giving program, including multi-channel campaigns and activities targeted at alumni, employees, retirees, students and UFV community.
- Works with Executive Director to plan and organize initiatives around confirmed priorities.
- Tracks all donor activity in Raiser’s Edge utilizing best practices in moves management.
MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISION
- Prepares and monitors annual business plan to achieve fundraising targets and KPIs. Oversees preparation of same by Annual Giving and Community Giving Officers.
- Prepares financial projections and reviews progress against goals on monthly basis.
- Supervises, mentors, monitors and evaluates performance of Annual Giving and Community Giving Officers.
- Engages in collaborative teamwork to motivate, encourage and inspire team members.

The Ideal candidate is a passionate fundraiser who thrives on connecting the dots and building relationships. The successful candidate will have a proven track record closing major and planned gifts in a collaborative, inclusive fashion, and has campaign experience. As an associate director, the new incumbent will have a talent for supervising, mentoring and inspiring staff, enabling self-directed activity and team work that contribute to the collective goals of the department and university.
A seasoned communicator, the ideal candidate has experience working with faculty, staff and senior administration in higher education to generate wins for programs and projects across the university. The successful applicant will be a creative thinker and problem solver, generating new opportunities as the University approaches its 50th anniversary.
- Minimum five (5) years major donor fundraising experience, preferably in a post-secondary institution.
- Experience working on a capital or comprehensive campaigns.
- Demonstrated experience managing fundraising staff, setting and monitoring contact and revenue goals.
- Personal success cultivating, soliciting and securing gifts in the six to eight-figure range.
- Demonstrated experience working with and soliciting gifts from high net worth individuals and corporations and community leaders.
- Demonstrated experience working with institution’s President, senior leadership team, faculty or equivalent and volunteer committees to identify prospects and solicit gifts.
- Demonstrated credibility, maturity, integrity and collaborative skills to lead others by influence.
- Creative and entrepreneurial outlook with a strong intellectual curiosity.
- Passionate about working with people. Exceptional customer service and people skills
- Public speaking experience.
- Expertly manages prospects using Raiser’s Edge and has experience using Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience working with and representing the interests of diverse populations.
- High standards of professional etiquette, ethics, integrity and judgement.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, handles complex/confidential/sensitive matters and maintains confidentiality.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with a keen attention to detail, spelling and grammar.
- Highly organized with excellent project management and planning skills to achieve goals and deadlines.
- Sound judgement, strong analytical skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability in the face of changing operational priorities.
- Ability to work under pressure, independently and as a team player.
- Knowledge of and experience in a post-secondary environment preferred.
- Knowledge of and experience working in the Fraser Valley an asset.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
- Undergraduate degree in an applicable discipline (e.g. Philanthropy, Commerce, Marketing, English) from a recognized institution. MA, MBA preferred.
- Certification or an equivalent combination of education and training in fundraising from an accredited association such as a AFP, CAGP or educational institute.
- CFRE designation preferred.
