The Learning Disabilities Society of Greater Vancouver (LDS) is a registered non-profit society that was founded in 1970 to help support children with learning difficulties. Our mission is to empower every child and youth with a Learning Disability in Greater Vancouver to achieve life-long confidence and success. Our growing programs and services operate from our offices in East Vancouver and North Vancouver, as well as from 8 Satellite School locations. We provide sustainable, affordable and individualized programs to ensure that all children have an opportunity to realize their full potential.

Purpose of Position

The Director of Development and Communications (DDC) will help to raise greater awareness of LDS and its impact, engage partners, and expand LDS visibility in our community. The DDC will be a key member of the LDS management team with broad responsibilities for communications, marketing and fundraising. The DDC will develop and evolve our communications and fundraising strategies, lead the organization’s brand and social media strategy, and share our vision of providing all children and youth with a Learning Disability the opportunity to be successful at school and in the future. The DDC  will work closely with the Executive Director to grow our fundraising capacity and revenues through individual, corporate and foundation giving and special events.

Roles and Responsibilities

Development and Fundraising:

  • Working with the ED and Board, develop, implement and evaluate annual fundraising plan
  • Develop strategies for individual and institutional giving programs
  • Working with the ED and Board, plan and coordinate special events
  • Working with the ED and Board, identify prospective individual and institutional donors and cultivate relationships; manage communications with current and prospective donors including timely reporting to current donors
  • Develop marketing collateral in support of fundraising efforts

Marketing and Communications:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate annual communications plan to reach LDS community stakeholders and increase LDS visibility
  • Manage development, distribution and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral, including newsletters, brochures, annual report, website
  • Manage press relations, social media messaging, communications around advocacy
  • Increase engagement in social media channels
  • Ensure consistency of all communications
  • Maintain live website, regularly updating with current information and news items
  • Maintain LDS brand on all external communications

Job Requirements

Skills and Qualifications

Required:

  • University undergraduate degree in related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in communications, fundraising, or public relations
  • Experience in grant writing
  • Strong oral and written communications skills; comfortable presenting to audiences
  • Strong leadership skills; high energy;
  • Strategic thinker; ability to shape strategies around organization objectives
  • Strong interpersonal skills; relationship builder; collaborative style
  • Ability to thrive in dynamic environment; entrepreneurial
  • Passion for non-profit work and community service
  • Proficient computer skills including with Office Suite, Adobe Illustrator and Wordpress
  • Self-motivated and proactive, ability to work in a team and independently

Desired:

  • Experience with graphic design and video editing
  • Experience in a non-profit environment
  • Experience with Mailchimp, Surveymonkey, social media
